Possibly it's the order in which you place the puzzle objects that determines how the memory is changed - this would work well with possible platform elements. Bold words are different puzzle elements.

Death/Initial version: "She drowned in the lake."

Lover/Friend option: "A gunboat came along and attacked her boat. Seeing her boat sinking, I ran to the dock and got in my boat. The wind carried me to her. I threw her a life preserver and rescued her."

Rival option: "I was on a boat in the lake when she came along in her gunboat and fired on me. With my boat sinking, I put on a life preserver and hoped the wind would blow me to the dock."
